Cowley County, Kansas is located in the South central part of Kansas and borders the Oklahoma State line. Most of the county is within a 45 minute drive of Wichita. Winfield is the county seat and other communities are Arkansas City, Burden, Dexter, Silverdale, Rock and Atlanta. Population of the county is 35,000.
The Arkansas and Walnut Rivers and their tributaries drain the tall grass prairie and farm ground that make up the vast majority of the land in the county. Corn, soybeans, wheat and cotton are raised on some of the farm ground. The eastern half of the county is predominately tall grass native pastures. Cowley County serves as host for many hunters from around the U.S. who come to have a chance at a trophy Whitetail. Watershed lakes, farm ponds, rivers and lakes offer excellent fishing and waterfowl opportunities. Quail populations are good across the county and some pheasants can be found on the western side. Coyote hunting and turkey hunting offer additional opportunities for the outdoorsman.
