Chautauqua County, Kansas is located in the SE part of Kansas and borders the Oklahoma State line. The county is within an hour and a half drive of either the Wichita Airport or the Tulsa Airport. Sedan is the county seat and has a population of 800. Cedar Vale is on the western edge of the county and has approximately 600 citizens. The county population is under 4000. Cattle, Oil and recreation are the major industries.
The Caney River and its tributaries drain the tall grass prairie that make up the vast majority of the land in the county. Corn, Soybeans and Wheat are raised on some of the better bottom farm ground and provide excellent forage for the native deer population. Chautauqua County serves as host for many hunters from around the U.S. who come to have a chance at a trophy Whitetail. Watershed lakes and farm ponds offer excellent fishing and waterfowl opportunities.
